This event will take place at NextFab located at 1800 North American Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19122\, on Saturday\, July 12\, 2025\, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. This event is an opportunity to meet the resident fellows and hear about their concepts and works in progress\, whether in wood\, film\, writing\, or other documentation. \nThis summer marks the 28th year that the Museum has sponsored the international residency program. The Fellows live\, travel\, and work independently and collaboratively in an intensive\, 8-week program from June 2 through August 1\, 2025. Typical activities include visits to local and regional museums and public and private collections of art. The residency culminates in an exhibition of their artwork\, opening Friday\, August 1st. The evening will begin with a gallery talk by the Resident Fellows\, followed by a reception. Sponsored and programmed by the Museum for Art in Wood and hosted by our partner NextFab\, the residency encourages research\, discussions\, studio work\, experiments\, and collaborations. \nSchedule for the day: \n\n10:00 AM Arrival (Coffee and Bagels will be provided)\n10:15 AM Welcome words and the artist presentations begin\n11:45 PM Guests will be able to watch demos\, see the shop\, talk more with the fellows\, and go on tours of NextFab.  \n1:00 PM Guests exit\n\n  \n** Attendees must wear closed-toe shoes. The residency is designed for artists in Greater Philadelphia who work in the medium of wood and is a collaboration between the Museum for Art in Wood and NextFab. An exhibition of the work created over the two-month-long program will be presented at NextFab. \nABOUT HENRY MERKER\n \n \nHenry Merker (b. 1996) designs experimental home goods in wood using CNC machining and traditional woodworking processes. In his studio practice\, Henry playfully leverages these tools in the pursuit of rare shapes – forms that question conventionality and reveal the beauty of wood through its versatility. \nIn his upcoming residency\, Henry will investigate cork – a sustainably harvested wood product – through this lens. By leveraging the material’s unique affinity for both carving and reconstitution\, he aims to create a zero-waste collection of design objects. \n  \n ABOUT NEXTFAB \n\nNextFab is a network of membership-based makerspaces that provide access to tools\, technology\, education\, events\, and services for makers and creatives. May 9\, 2024 | 6:00 pm EST | In-person Event\nWalk-ups Welcome \nStop by NextFab for the Second Thursday and catch the last weeks of the 2024 Winter Residency Fellow Adam Atkinson’s exhibition Communing: Objects of Impermanence\, a series of objects utilizing salvaged materials in the spirit of the program’s mission of sustainability. The residency is designed for artists in Greater Philadelphia who work in the medium of wood and is a collaboration between the Museum for Art in Wood and NextFab. Communing: Objects of Impermanence is on view at the NextFab North Philadelphia location and will be closing on May 20th. Don’t miss the last public opportunity to see Atkinson’s Objects of Impermanence. \n  \nPortrait of Adam Atkinson by Myles Pettengill @myles_standis \nAdam Atkinson (he/they) is a Philadelphia-based metalsmith\, curator\, and educator. They received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Studio Practices from Boise State University in 2013 and a Master of Fine Arts in Metal Design from East Carolina University in 2019. Atkinson’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally\, including at the Metal Museum in Memphis\, Tennessee\, Blowing Rock Museum of Art and History in Blowing Rock\, North Carolina\, and Nagoya Zokei University in Japan. \nAtkinson uses a variety of techniques and materials to explore different narratives in their artistic practice. In their The Orifice Series\, they explored the link between the body and nature using metal and wood juxtapositions. Each piece draws upon organic\, bodily imagery and fur textures overlaid on carved cherry wood; all carefully handcrafted using repousse\, an ancient technique of forming sheet metal\, woodcarving\, and burning. Atkinson also interrogated the role traditional Ancient Roman busts played as historical markers for powerful figures in his Wood Bust Series. With these works\, they questioned the legacies of the figures who have been memorialized through busts\, what marks a great achievement in our society\, and the role the form and function play in visualizing social structures. \n  \n  \n  \n

American St\, Philadelphia\n$100 General Registration \n$85 Museum or NextFab Member Registration \nIn celebration of the closing of PLACING: The Windgate Arts Residency Program 2023\, the Museum for Art in Wood and NextFab are proud to announce an afternoon workshop with artist Teresa Audet. In this exploratory workshop\, students will learn several types of weaving with rattan reed. We will cover twined basketry\, random weave\, and hex weave. Everyone will get to try a few techniques and then combine them to create a sculptural vessel of their own design. No prior experience necessary.\n* Image above: Teresa Audet\, A Journey\, 2023. Photo John Carlano \nPortrait of Teresa Audet \nTeresa Audet creates sculptures using carved wood\, woven rattan\, and cast paper pulp. Her current research focuses on the connections between craft\, performance art\, and care ethics. Audet is interested in objects that serve as vessels for unexpected and emotional interaction through utility\, humor\, and absurdity. Her work contains hidden interiors and unexpected drawers\, rewarding the viewer for deep looking. The small luxuries within these works are experienced on an intimate level. \nAudet’s practice explores the role of artmaking as a meditative tool for emotional processing. For Audet\, practicing mindfulness through the use of hand tools and repetitive actions becomes a performance of care and communication. The resulting objects serve as a visual diary\, telling secrets between her hands and her brain. This event is an opportunity to meet the resident fellows and hear about their concepts and works in progress\, whether in wood\, film\, writing\, or other documentation. \nThis summer marks the 27th year that the Museum has sponsored the international residency program. The Fellows live\, travel\, and work independently and collaboratively in an intensive\, 8-week program from June 5 through August 4\, 2023. Typical activities include visits to local and regional museums and public and private collections of art. The residency culminates in an exhibition of their artwork\, opening Friday\, August 4th. The evening will begin with a gallery talk by the Resident Fellows\, followed by a reception. The residency is designed for artists in Greater Philadelphia who work in the medium of wood and is a collaboration between the Center for Art in Wood and NextFab. An exhibition of the work created over the two-month-long program will be presented at the NextFab North Philadelphia location. \nMichael Ferrin is an artist from Southwest Philadelphia. Working primarily in wood\, he employs his training as a furniture maker and his education as an artist to explore the connection between spirituality and craft; relationship to place; and how power shapes\, and is reinforced by\, narratives about craft history. Michael’s interests range from the influence of Muslim arts on European medieval design vocabulary to the visual landscape of Philadelphia’s public transit infrastructure. He has recently been incorporating Persian khatam marquetry into his work. \n  \n  \nABOUT NEXTFAB \n\nNextFab is a network of membership-based makerspaces that provide access to tools\, technology\, education\, events\, and services for makers and creatives. Photo by Nick Doll \nPortrait of Robert Aiosa by Rafael Soldi \nRobert Aiosa: Working site-specifically and employing a mix of fine and construction-grade materials with highly detailed carving techniques\, Aiosa investigates the built environment and its social\, economic\, and environmental impacts. \nAiosa was born in 1982 in Smithtown\, New York and currently lives and works in Philadelphia\, PA. He earned his BFA from the University of the Arts\, Philadelphia in 2005 and his MFA from the University of Wisconsin\, Madison in 2015. He joined the staff of renowned print atelier Graphicstudio at University of South Florida\, Tampa as its Research Associate and Sculpture Fabricator. His work has been shown throughout the United States\, most recently a solo exhibition at Sanger Gallery\, Key West\, FL\, Skyway 20/21\, Museum of Fine Arts\, St Petersburg Fl\, and was included in the 2018 Florida Prize exhibition at the Orlando Museum of Art.
