DESCRIPTION:[Image from left to right: Hilary Pfeifer\, Pussy Grabs Back (2017)\, Photo by Dan Kvitka. Untitled Mangle Board\, Germany\, n.d. Collection of Marty and Buck Carson\, Photo by James B. Abbott and Jay Texter] \nGallery Talk\nSMOOTH: Mangle Boards of Northern Europe & Contemporary Concepts\nJune 6\, 2017\, 6 – 8:00 PM\nJay Raymond and artist Beth Ireland at the Center\nJoin us in the Gerry Lenfest Gallery for a gallery talk with curator Jay Raymond and artist Beth Ireland for a discussion on our current exhibition of mangle boards\, highly-ornamented planks of wood used to smooth wrinkles from linen in the 16th to 19th century and their conceptual counterparts. \nGuest curator Jay Raymond studied four private and eighteen museum collections\, in total more than 7\,000 mangle boards\, and authored a massive reference\, Mangle Boards of Northern Europe (2015). \nArtist Beth Ireland’s belief in the power of the object is a driving force in her work. She explors the idea of memory and the creation of object as a visible symbol of memory. \nFirst Fridays – June 2\, July 7\, 2017\, 5 – 8:00 PM at the Center \nGallery talks – June 6\, 2017\, 6 – 8:00 PM with Jay Raymond and artist Beth Ireland at the Center \nFor questions about our events and to RSVP please contact Katie Sorenson at katie@museumforartinwood.org. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Small Favors: Think Inside the Box
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Art in Wood\, in collaboration with The Clay Studio\, presents Small Favors: Think Inside the Box\, which will be on view on the Center’s Len Scherock Museum Store Art Wall and in the Korman Gallery at The Clay Studio. The exhibition engages new and established artists\, challenging them to produce work using varied materials that fit inside a 4-inch acrylic cube. In 2006\, The Clay Studio conceived the Small Favors exhibition as an effort to advance fine craft to the entry-level collector in addition to seasoned collectors. Over the past decade\, thousands of artists have participated\, responding to the boundaries of the contained space and the opportunity to create small scale sculpture. \nOPENING RECEPTION | First Friday | Friday\, March 3\, 2017 | 5:30–8pm | Progressive event at The Center for Art in Wood and The Clay Studio \nFirst Friday | Friday\, April 7\, 2017 | 5–8pm | At The Center for Art in Wood \nSpring Fling Reception | First Friday | Friday\, May 5\, 2017 | 5–8pm | Progressive event at The Center for Art in Wood and The Clay Studio \nThe Center’s ARTISTS: Ally Crow Linda Ferber Ron Fleming\nAmy Forsyth Dewey Garrett Brooke Hine\nSarah Martin Stephanie Osser Keunho Peter Park\nDavid Plemons Lucinda Rawe Judith Rosenthal\nRandall Rosenthal Joshua Salesin Andrew Sartorius\nNorm Sartorius Jon Sauer Merryll Saylan\nJason Schneider Kimberly Winkle \nThe Clay Studio ARTISTS: Maria Albornoz Lisa Belsky Lynne Berman\nAnn Chahbandour Matthew Courtney Chad Curtis\nDominique Ellis Janet Felton Marguerita Hagan\nStuart Gair Vicky Gold Lois Harvey Darien Johnson\nJennifer Johnson Yu-Jung Kim Lauren Mabry\nDiane Marimow Didem Mert Susan Strassberg\nKatherine Teesdale And Many More \nPictured (left to right\, top to bottom): Judith Rosenthal\, A Walk in the Wood\, 2016 | Norm and Andrew Sartorius\, \nFather and Son Triangle\, 2017 | Chad Curtis\, Green Horizon 002\, 2016 | Stuart Gair\, Soda Fired Espresso Cup\, 2016 | \nJoshua Salesin\, Mandala Cup\, 2017 | Brooke Hine\, Hine Flower\, 2017 | Lauren Mabry\, Enclosed Cylinde\, 2016 | \nDidem Mert\, Chocolate Sprinkle Pinky Winky Brooch\, 2016
