November 5\, 2021 | 5 – 8 pm EDT | In-Person Event\nThe Center for Art in Wood invites you to celebrate the opening of its new exhibition\, Extra-Human: The Art of Michael Ferris on the evening of Friday\, November 5. \nThe larger-than-life figurative sculptures of Bronx-based artist Michael Ferris embody a rich fusion of cultural and artistic traditions. Trained as a painter\, Ferris embraced sculpture twenty-five years ago and developed an inlay technique inspired by intarsia woodworking from his Middle-Eastern heritage. Ferris’s unique approach to this historical process involves the reclaiming of discarded wood\, a method informed by his environmental concerns. He further expands this traditional practice through the use of pigmented grout\, which yields a color palette that contrasts with wood’s natural hues. \nMichael Ferris’s work has been exhibited widely at museums across the nation and his work can be found in public collections at the de Young Museum in San Francisco\, CA; Illinois State Museum in Springfield\, IL; and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville\, AR. Extra-Human\, which is guest-curated by Suzanne Ramljak\, is the first museum solo exhibition of the artist’s career to be presented on the East Coast. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nFor questions\, contact Katie Sorenson\, Senior Manager of Partnerships and Engagement\, at katie@museumforartinwood.org \n  \nToufic\, 2010. Now in its twenty-fifth year\, the Center for Art in Wood’s Windgate Wood Arts Residency program (long known as ITE\, International Turning Exchange) is a collegial experience that encourages an open exchange of creative and technical innovations in the field of art in wood. Throughout the summer\, the resident fellows dedicate eight weeks to focusing on individual and collaborative work\, developing peer relationships\, and testing their vision and skill in the material. As a group\, the work of the 2022 cohort represents a wide range of approaches—from historic furniture techniques to rapid prototyping and digital fabrication\, from studio furniture to multimedia performance. Nov 4\, 2022 | 5:00 – 8 pm EDT | In-person Event\nWalk-ups Welcome \nJoin us for First Friday and the opening of Vessel: Embodiment\, Autonomy\, and Ornament in Wood! \nConnecting to the Center for Art in Wood’s origins as an advocate for woodturning in art\, this exhibition examines the vessel as a source of inspiration for artists working in wood. How have they been informed not only by the material and the pleasing roundness of the turned form\, but also questions of offering and ownership\, or concealment and emptiness? For millennia\, the idea of the vessel has been used to explain the secrets of the universe. This exhibition\, which includes works from the Center’s permanent collection as well as on loan\, demonstrates the breadth of reflection\, empowerment\, subversion\, and spiritual awareness inspired by the act of containment and the vessel form. \nWith works by: Humaira Abid\, Michael Bauermeister\, Vivian Chiu\, Kyle Cottier\, Alison Croney Moses\, Frank E. DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening for Gina Siepel: To Understand a Tree | Fri\, March 1\, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm | In-person Event\nWalk-in’s Welcome \nJoin us at the Museum for Art in Wood for First Friday and the opening of Gina Siepel: To Understand a Tree. To Understand a Tree is inspired by a desire to contemplate a living forest tree and its immediate habitat from the perspective of a queer-identified woodworker\, in a way that challenges and provokes an often-assumed binary between living tree and dead wood. It links legacies of 19th-century transcendentalism with contemporary biological understandings of forest interconnection\, ecofeminism\, queer ecology\, eco-philosophy\, and Indigenous teachings about human-nature relationships. These studies\, along with many hours spent in the forest\, encourage a shift in the consideration of the tree as a subject rather than simply an object\, which fundamentally impacts ideas of woodworking practice and our ecological responsibility. Involving collaboration\, public engagement\, site-based study and contemplation\, video documentation\, and woodworking\, To Understand a Tree functions as a small-scale way of exploring big questions about the place of humans in the environment\, the scale and speed at which we consume natural resources\, and which organisms are included or excluded in a definition of “community.” Forests are complex and interconnected systems\, and in that spirit\, To Understand a Tree connects material practice and object-making to questions of forest ecology\, climate change\, and more than human personhood. To Understand a Tree is an ongoing project of Gina Siepel as an artist in residence at the Smith College MacLeish Field Station. \nRemarks will take place at 6:30 pm. \n\nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening for Strange Woodcraft: Weird and Eerie Sculpture from the Museum’s Permanent Collection | Fri\, October 4\, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm\nJoin us for the First Friday Opening for Strange Woodcraft: Weird and Eerie Sculpture from the Museum’s Permanent Collection. \n\n\nMany artists\, collectors\, and enthusiasts turn to wood for its inviting warmth and its promissory sense of nostalgic familiarity. Departing from these typical associations\, Strange Woodcraft: Weird and Eerie Sculpture from the Museum’s Permanent Collection\, presents works which nurture a discomforting curiosity with the unfamiliar. Taking inspiration from cultural critic Mark Fisher’s insight that our attraction to the “weird” and the “eerie” stem from a fascination for “what lies beyond standard perception\, cognition and experience\,” Strange Woodcraft embraces sculptural forms which feel out of place\, askew\, haunting\, or just downright odd. \nResiding in the gallery of the Fleur and Charles Bresler Research Library at the Museum for Art in Wood\, this exhibition includes work from sixteen artists\, held in the museum’s permanent collection\, whose sculptural forms probe at the weird\, eerie—and perhaps even grotesque—registers of wood. In doing so\, Strange Woodcraft encourages visitors to consider the presence of more-than-human forces that may linger in crafted objects\, just beyond common perception. \nPictured above: Alain Mailland\, Purple Heart\, 1999. DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening for La Famiglia: Mark Sfirri | Fri\, November 1\, 2024 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm | In-person Event\nWalk-in’s Welcome \nJoin us at the Museum for Art in Wood for First Friday and the opening of Mark Sfirri: La Famiglia\, a highly autobiographical exhibition of new and never-before-seen work by celebrated artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri. This exhibition presents a way of thinking about the definition of family and its meanings through different lenses: families that are chosen vs. born into; families of species (trees and wood types) and identities; and familial strife and unconditional love\, support\, and dysfunction. It represents a coming to terms with generational passing through the artist’s adoption of a spontaneous “flow state” approach in his turning\, carving\, and surfacing processes.  The grandchild of four first-generation Americans who came through Ellis Island around 1900 and settled in Chester\, the oldest city in Pennsylvania\, the artist presents several installations of sculpture that consider communities comprised of families with their own histories\, ethnic backgrounds\, biases\, and quirks—all trying to coexist in new and evolving worlds. \nRemarks will take place at 6:30 pm. \n\nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it.
