The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nAnne Ishii is the Executive Director of Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia. Her writings have appeared in multiple publications including Slate\, the Village Voice\, and Publishers Weekly. Her translation and editorial projects include the Eisner-award winning manga My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame\, Batmanga!: the Secret History of Batman in Japan\, and Massive: Gay Japanese Manga and the Men Who Make It. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nKeunho Peter Park is an international artist\, woodworker\, and instrument maker who teaches at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He holds a B.F.A in painting from South Korea’s Kookmin University and a 2013 M.F.A. in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Jan. 4\, 2019 | 6 – 6:30 pm | The Center for Art in Wood Museum Collection\nFREE\nObject Lesson is a monthly First Friday speaker series that will open wide the cases of the Center’s Museum Collection through the perspectives of individuals from the worlds of art\, design\, performance\, community activism\, education\, and more\, creating fresh dialogues about the Collection and its objects. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nSean Kelley has run all public programming at Eastern State Penitentiary since 1995\, when he was hired as the organization’s first full-time employee. He produced the site’s award-winning audio tour in 2002\, now heard by more than a million visitors. During his tenure\, he has overseen the selection of and curated more than 100 site-specific artist installations. \nMr. Kelley is currently focused on developing programming to address the enormous growth in the US prison population since 1970\, and the causes for racial disparities within that population. In 2014 he oversaw the development of a 16-foot\, 1.5 ton bar graph on the penitentiary’s baseball diamond illustrating these trends. Mr. Kelley oversaw the development of a major companion exhibit\, Prisons Today: Questions in the Age of Mass Incarceration which won the 2016 Overall Award for Excellence at the American Alliance of Museums annual competition. \nMr. Kelley visits active prisons and writes critically about prison museums and sites of detention. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nMark Sfirri is a furniture maker and sculptor who incorporates lathe-turned forms\, often turned on multiple axes\, in his work. He has demonstrated his techniques throughout North America and Europe\, as well as Australia and New Zealand.
