Object Lesson is a monthly First Friday speaker series that opens wide the cases of the Center’s Museum Collection through the perspectives of individuals from the worlds of art\, design\, performance\, community activism\, education\, and more\, creating fresh dialogues about the Collection and its objects. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nKsenia Nouril (Photo by Matt Rencher) \nKsenia Nouril is the Jensen Bryan Curator at The Print Center\, a 105-year-old non-profit institution in Philadelphia dedicated to expanding the understanding of photography and printmaking as vital contemporary arts. A specialist in global contemporary art\, Ksenia previously held a Contemporary and Modern Art Perspectives (C-MAP) Fellowship in the International Program at The Museum of Modern Art\, New York. She has organized exhibitions at the Bruce Museum\, Lower East Side Printshop\, MoMA\, and Zimmerli Art Museum. Ksenia lectures widely and frequently writes for international exhibition catalogues\, magazines\, and academic journals\, including ARTMargins Online\, The Calvert Journal\, Institute of the Present\, OSMOS\, and Woman’s Art Journal. She has published two books: Art and Theory of Post-1989 Central and Eastern Europe: A Critical Anthology (co-editor and contributor\, MoMA\, 2018) and Ilya Kabakov and Viktor Pivovarov: Stories About Ourselves (editor and contributor\, Rutgers University Press\, 2019). Ksenia holds a BA in Art History and Slavic Studies from New York University and an MA and PhD in Art History from Rutgers\, The State University of New Jersey. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year.\nDonation\n \nFor questions contact Katie Sorenson\, Community Engagement Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org

This program will focus on regional practice against a three-hundred-year history of artisanship and craft manufacture in Pennsylvania. Milliken\, who curated the Center’s Pennsylvania Made exhibition\, will talk about wooden vessels\, furniture\, saffron boxes\, and sculpture while touching upon processes of ornamental wood turning\, the commitment to the value of collaboration in Pennsylvania craft and design\, and other discussions unique to creative engagement with wood in the region. \nJennifer-Navva Milliken is the Artistic Director for The Center for Art in Wood. Prior to her arrival at the Center\, she served as an embedded staff member in international art museums\, as an independent curator\, and as the founder of a cross-disciplinary art space. Her exhibitions have been presented in museums\, art fairs\, galleries\, and unconventional spaces\, and her writings have been seen in exhibition catalogues\, anthologies\, and publications that investigate and critique the intersecting fields of art\, craft\, and design. She recently completed a Windgate Curatorial Fellowship at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and a curatorial internship at the Corning Museum of Glass. Darro is a contributor to publications on contemporary craft and decorative arts and has juried international exhibitions. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nJames Maurelle is an interdisciplinary artist\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, and sound art are his analog and digital primes\, His work investigates the correlation formed between labor and creativity\, at the center of this byway is the spirit of his work. Constructing objects and moving images are not unlike creating music compositions\, the accompaniment: i\,e\, tools\, and materials\, are a call and response to dexterity. The rubric to complete any composition is to know ones’ instrument(s)/tools; the creative process is based on this reciprocal understanding. Jazz is the primer which propels the work\, the tone/feel of every composition is in direct association with the culture. Every object I compose is a physical versioning of a historic recording of happening\, every tool used is an augmented scale referencing an industrial progression. The materials (wood\, metal\, plastic\, film) are the staff paper\, and every committed strike upon these materials forms a note or chord. The fluidity connecting mind\, hand\, and tools are based on the augmented triad which is the cornerstone of my work ethic. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nDominique Ellis’ visual practice and research investigates global craft traditions\, architecture\, and history.  Her interdisciplinary practice explores storytelling through oral history\, documentary photography and installations examining urban blight\, social change\, and nostalgia.  Her recent research interests are focused on the economics of craft\, industry\, and family in the past century. \nEllis received her M.F.A. in Printmaking at Tyler School of Art in 2013. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nSean Kelley has run all public programming at Eastern State Penitentiary since 1995\, when he was hired as the organization’s first full-time employee. He produced the site’s award-winning audio tour in 2002\, now heard by more than a million visitors. During his tenure\, he has overseen the selection of and curated more than 100 site-specific artist installations. \nMr. Kelley is currently focused on developing programming to address the enormous growth in the US prison population since 1970\, and the causes for racial disparities within that population. In 2014 he oversaw the development of a 16-foot\, 1.5 ton bar graph on the penitentiary’s baseball diamond illustrating these trends. Mr. Kelley oversaw the development of a major companion exhibit\, Prisons Today: Questions in the Age of Mass Incarceration which won the 2016 Overall Award for Excellence at the American Alliance of Museums annual competition. \nMr. Kelley visits active prisons and writes critically about prison museums and sites of detention.
