Photo by John Carlano \nAbout the Speakers \n \n \n \n \n \n Michael Mann is Presidential Distinguished Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania\, with a secondary appointment in the Annenberg School for Communication. He is director of the Penn Center for Science\, Sustainability\, and the Media (PCSSM). He has received many honors and awards\, including NOAA’s Outstanding Publication award in 2002 and selection by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002. He contributed\, with other IPCC authors\, to the award of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He received the Award for Public Engagement with Science from the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018 and the Climate Communication Prize from the American Geophysical Union in 2018. In 2019 he received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement\, and in 2020\, he received the World Sustainability Award of the MDPI Sustainability Foundation. He was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2020. He received the Leo Szilard Award of the American Physical Society in 2021 and was named Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Association in 2023. He is the author of several books including Dire Predictions\, The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars\, The Madhouse Effect\, The New Climate War and Our Fragile Moment. \n \n \n \n \n \n Jessica Gath is a possibilitarian who makes artwork in paint\, garments\, zines\, food\, correspondence\, community\, activism\, songs\, dirt\, plants\, videos and whatever else gets the job done. Cycles of life and our connections to Earth and one another are integral to her practice. Jessica is a founding member of Artists Commit\, an amorphous collective of artists working to support one another\, arts workers\, institutions\, and businesses built up around art and the art world in bringing environmental justice into mainstream conversation and practices. \n \n \n \n \n \n A Philadelphia native and [word] enthusiast\, Kiersten Adams writes proudly about her hometown and community. She is a West Chester University and Covid-19 pandemic graduate holding a B.A. in English with a focus on writing. A lover of art and culture\, Kiersten explores these concepts in multitudinous forms. Through journalism\, non-profit work\, photography\, and creative writing she is constantly finding new ways to obsess over what’s going on around her. Current Obsessions: Black joy\, Black futures\, Black Lives \n \n \n \n \n \n Katie Hudnall received her BFA in Sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art & Design and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Furniture Design/Woodworking. Jackie currently coordinates the planning and production of exhibitions at the Craft Coven Gallery\, where you can also find her mixing up cocktails for First Friday events. \n \n \n \n \n \n About Miriam Carpenter \nMiriam Carpenter is a contemporary artist based in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania whose work includes wood sculpture\, furniture\, ceramics and works on paper. As a Rhode Island School of Design alumna\, she began her career as a furniture designer at George Nakashima’s studio. Through new processes\, her work explores things often overlooked—unveiling the hidden complexities around us. Carpenter’s work can be found internationally in both private and public collections including the Michener Art Museum (PA) and the Museum for Art in Wood (PA)\, among others\, and has been exhibited most notably at the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Fuller Craft Museum\, Wharton Esherick Museum\, Museum for Art in Wood\, Philadelphia International Airport\, SOFA Chicago\, Design Miami/Paris and Moderne Gallery where she is currently represented. In 2021\, she had her fourth major solo exhibition with her first museum solo show at the Michener Art Museum. In 2025\, she was nominated for Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum’s National Design Awards\, an official project of the White House Millennium Council which honors innovation and impact in design. This talk approaches WARP Wood 2025 as belonging to a continuum extending through the three-decades-long duration of the program and further—through Philadelphia’s long history as a city that has supported artists and craftspeople in unique ways. \nAbout Holly Gore \nWhat does it mean to build and who can be a builder? The very language of construction is saturated with moralism: angles are “right” and boards “true.” In artist homes and intentional communities\, the ability to construct one’s own living environment has assumed cosmic dimensions of world-building. Sometimes\, though\, the liberative potential of woodworking is limited by gendered and racialized norms whose deconstruction is overdue. \nAs a writer and curator\, I excavate histories of art\, craft\, and design toward illuminating the present. My recent focus has been on modernism and the work of building—in wood\, metal\, earth\, and stone. During the WARP Wood residency\, I did research in the Museum for Art in Wood archives on the beginnings of the program as a residency for woodturners. In the process\, I found that this turning legacy persists in shaping WARP Wood today\, even as the residency has changed dramatically over its thirty-year lifespan. \nI am based in Chester County\, Pennsylvania\, where I am Director of Interpretation and Associate Curator at the Wharton Esherick Museum. She also does freelance food\, beverage and prop styling for print and digital-media marketing campaigns. Jackie grew up helping out in her family’s art gallery where she learned about printmaking and art framing. She attended Savannah College of Art and Design for Art History and Arts Administration. In her spare time she enjoys learning new art skills and dabbles in mediums such as woodworking\, etching and ceramics. Jackie currently coordinates the planning and production of exhibitions at the Craft Coven Gallery\, where you can also find her mixing up cocktails for First Friday events. \n \n \n \n \n \n About Miriam Carpenter \nMiriam Carpenter is a contemporary artist based in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania whose work includes wood sculpture\, furniture\, ceramics and works on paper. As a Rhode Island School of Design alumna\, she began her career as a furniture designer at George Nakashima’s studio. Through new processes\, her work explores things often overlooked—unveiling the hidden complexities around us. Carpenter’s work can be found internationally in both private and public collections including the Michener Art Museum (PA) and the Museum for Art in Wood (PA)\, among others\, and has been exhibited most notably at the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Fuller Craft Museum\, Wharton Esherick Museum\, Museum for Art in Wood\, Philadelphia International Airport\, SOFA Chicago\, Design Miami/Paris and Moderne Gallery where she is currently represented. In 2021\, she had her fourth major solo exhibition with her first museum solo show at the Michener Art Museum. In 2025\, she was nominated for Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum’s National Design Awards\, an official project of the White House Millennium Council which honors innovation and impact in design. Post graduate\, Lin has been a Fellow at UNC Asheville\, a craft education intern at North House Folk School\, the Staff Fellow and Media Coordinator at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. She has held Windgate Artist Residencies at San Diego State University and SUNY Purchase and was a recipient of the Center for Craft’s inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship. Harrington graduated from the Cabinet & Furnituremaking program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. She also holds an M.F.A. in Wood and an M.A. In Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Artist:\nViola Bordon is an artist and educator based in Philadelphia whose work examines transformation across material\, ecological\, and social systems. Her quilting is an act that binds histories of labor\, belief\, and resistance. Working through inherited methods of reuse and repair\, she frames systems of power that shape both personal and collective experience. Her quilts negotiate structures that hold tension between faith and skepticism\, memory and material. Quiet repetitive labor forming articulated dissent\, allowing form itself to think through what endurance makes visible. Her practice also includes environmental installations\, drawing on methods of reuse\, endurance\, and collaboration. Her projects have been supported by the Fulbright Commission\, Lilly Endowment\, Sachs Program for Arts Innovation\, US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and Salt Planes State Park. Using furniture as a lens to examine gender\, labor\, and artistic expression\, the conversation will consider how domestic objects reflected and shaped women’s roles in early America. \nThe discussion centers on three furniture forms that inspired the exhibition BA Harrington: Suite Américanine: dower chests\, writing desks\, and sewing tables. Each of these objects occupied a distinct place in a woman’s life. Dower chests safeguarded textiles\, clothing\, and household goods that accompanied a woman into marriage; writing desks provided a space for correspondence\, record-keeping\, and intellectual engagement; and sewing tables supported the textile work expected of women and often served as a measure of domestic skill and accomplishment. Together\, these forms reveal the complex ways furniture functioned not only as utilitarian objects but also as markers of identity\, status\, education\, and gender expectations. \nPanelists will examine the cultural significance and craftsmanship of these furnishings\, considering the woodworkers who designed and built them\, the social customs that informed their use\, and the women whose daily lives were intertwined with them. The conversation will also explore the paradox embedded within these objects: although they were frequently commissioned\, designed\, and constructed by men\, they were created to organize\, contain\, and sometimes conceal the labor\, creativity\, and personal worlds of women. \nThrough a feminist lens\, the panel will connect these historical forms to BA Harrington’s contemporary practice. Historically designed and built by men\, these furnishings often concealed women’s labor and creativity. In Suite Américanine\, Harrington transforms them into structures that reveal rather than hide textile work\, bringing women’s craftsmanship to the forefront and inviting viewers to reconsider whose labor and stories have been valued. \nBringing together perspectives from history\, material culture\, and contemporary practice\, this conversation offers an opportunity to reflect on the enduring relationship between furniture\, gender\, and creative expression across centuries of American history. \n  \nPanelists: \nJustina Barrett\nJustina Barrett serves as the Chief Learning and Engagement Officer at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, one of the nation’s largest archives of historical documents\, founded in 1824. In this role\, she oversees all public programming\, K-12 educational activities\, and external engagement efforts\, including communications and partnerships. She works to showcase and make accessible HSP’s collection of over 23 million manuscripts\, books\, and graphic images. She brings to her role over two decades of museum education experience in art museums and historic houses. Justina earned a bachelor’s degree in history with teaching certification from Bryn Mawr College and a master’s degree in early American material culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware. \nBA Harrington\nSince 2012\, Harrington has been a Professor of Woodworking in the Department of Art and Design\, and Director of the Wood Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She continues to write essays\, speak at conferences\, and build sculptural work in reference to early American furniture forms. She has held Windgate Artist Residencies at San Diego State University and SUNY Purchase and was a recipient of the Center for Craft’s inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship. Each year this substantial mid-career grant is awarded to two artists who are revising\, reclaiming\, and advancing the history of craft through their work. Harrington graduated from the Cabinet & Furnituremaking program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. She also holds an M.F.A. in Wood and an M.A. In Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \nChristopher Storb\nChristopher Storb is a furniture conservator\, woodworking historian\, and instructor of joinery\, woodturning\, and woodcarving.
