February 7\, 2025 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm ET | In-person\nWalk-ups Welcome \nJoin us for a First Friday tour with artist Mark Sfirri of La Famiglia\, his first museum solo exhibition. This highly anticipated exhibition of new and never-before-seen work by celebrated artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri presents a way of thinking about the definition of family and its meanings through different lenses: families that are chosen vs. born into; families of species (trees and wood types) and identities; and familial strife and unconditional love\, support\, and dysfunction. It represents a coming to terms with generational passing\, through the artist’s adoption of a spontaneous\, “flow state” approach in his turning\, carving\, and surfacing processes. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a full-color catalogue\, published by the Museum for Art in Wood\, that includes essays by artist Miriam Carpenter and writer and curator Craig Edelbrock along with writings by Sfirri and documentation on the works in the exhibition. \nMark Sfirri is an esteemed figure in the world of woodturning and woodworking. Born with an innate passion for craftsmanship\, creativity\, and artistic collaboration\, he is renowned for his innovations in art in wood. \nSfirri earned a BFA and MFA in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design\, where he began to explore ways to incorporate lathe-turned parts into furniture and turned some double-rimmed platters\, one of which was his first off-center turning. As an MFA student\, he made a set of six dining chairs constructed of off-center turned elements\, which planted the seeds for his future experimentations in multi-axis spindle turning. \nSfirri’s work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide\, and is held in numerous public collections including the Museum of Arts & Design (NY)\, Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh\, PA)\, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (DC)\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MN)\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA)\, Yale University Art Gallery\, the James A. Michener Art Museum (Doylestown\, PA)\, and the Museum for Art in Wood (Philadelphia\, PA). As a maker\, researcher\, and writer\, he has conducted demonstrations and lectures throughout North America\, Europe\, Australia\, and New Zealand. \nIn addition to his role as an artist\, Sfirri is professor emeritus at Bucks County Community College (Newtown\, PA)\, where he taught fulltime for nearly 40 years. DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening for Katie Hudnall: The Longest Distance between Two Points | Fri\, March 7\, 2025 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm | In-person Event\nWalk-in’s Welcome \nJoin us at the Museum for Art in Wood for First Friday and the opening of Katie Hudnall: The Longest Distance between Two Points. The first museum-organized solo presentation of Hudnall’s unique and captivating work\, The Longest Distance between Two Points reveals a rare glimpse into the artist’s rich inner world. Here\, the absurd and mechanically improbable merges with fine woodworking and salvaged wood materials to bring mechanisms and structures to life and action. \nThe Longest Distance between Two Points represents Hudnall’s most ambitious work yet. At the center of the exhibition is a complex interactive installation centering on a monumental cabinet for treasures found and carefully arranged by the artist. This idiosyncratic take on the Wünderkammer\, made with reverence for the eccentric collector that lives in all of us\, is no mere piece of storage furniture: every pull of a drawer instigates a specific response elsewhere in the space\, highlighting the delight in the “inefficient beauty of roundabout function” as actions traverse meandering paths from gesture to outcome. \nKatie Hudnall received her BFA in Sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art & Design and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Furniture Design/Woodworking. Hudnall lives in Madison\, Wisconsin\, where she runs the Woodworking and Furniture Program at the University of Madison\, Wisconsin. When she’s not teaching\, she spends her time making tools for problems both real and imagined. \nHudnall’s distinctive work is held in public and private collections and has been presented in exhibitions throughout the United States\, including Making a Seat at the Table: Women Transform Woodworking (Museum for Art in Wood\, 2019). Dec. 5\, 2025 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nWalk-ups Welcome \nPlease join us for the First Friday opening of American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood! \nDuring the 1970s\, prominent American woodturners like Bob Stocksdale and David Ellsworth marshalled their virtuosic talents to turn vessels that showcased the natural and idiosyncratic features of wood such as knots\, infestations\, and complex grain figure. Embracing species such as Brazilian rosewood\, African blackwood\, and pink ivory wood that appeared “exotic” to American audiences\, these artists highlighted the drama of naturally occurring figuration. By the 1980s\, artists began to challenge this prevailing orthodoxy; pioneers like Meryll Saylan questioned the creative value of rarefied wood types and the field’s prevailing rejection of surface decoration. American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood follows the rebellious\, experimental\, and often quirky spirit of artists who dare to obscure the unadulterated beauty of wood grain. \nDrawn from the Museum’s permanent collection\, American Graffiti presents twenty-one objects by eighteen artists. Works of turning\, carving\, and sculpture demonstrate how the allure of color and surface design has captivated artists working in wood. For some\, wood offers a blank canvas for representational sculpture\, embellished by the application of vivid paint or imagery. For others\, dye and surface texturing deepens the exploration of formal qualities like shape and volume\, without the distraction of figured patterning. Taken together\, these artists offer a tongue in cheek response to collectors\, enthusiasts\, and critics that limit their appreciation of wood art to the beauty of strictly natural features. While you’re at the Museum\, experience American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood and make sure to explore our permanent collection of over 1\,400 objects and shop our Museum Store for unique handmade objects\, jewelry\, artworks\, and books. \n\nViola Bordon: Muliebrity is a part of Radical Americana\, a series of exhibitions organized by a consortium of Philadelphia’s extensive collection of arts and cultural institutions that celebrate how today’s artists are continuing the city’s unique and rich legacy as a center for creativity and civic engagement. To learn more about the other participating artists and organizations\, please click HERE. \nSince the American Revolution\, the Roman goddess Libertas has personified the nation’s ideals\, embodying evolving definitions of freedom and belonging. The 1886 dedication of the Statue of Liberty\, however\, unfolded amid national conflict over the boundaries of liberty\, including the end of Reconstruction\, debates over immigration\, and the rise of women’s suffrage. Drawing on archival research at the American Historical Society\, textile artist Viola Bordon examines “Lady Liberty” as a fragmented American icon. Her triptych Muliebrity\, composed through appliqué and found textiles\, invokes a distinctly feminine power grounded in endurance and embodied knowledge\, prompting us to consider how figures of womanhood have been repeatedly mobilized to serve patriarchal institutions.\n\nAbout the Artist: \nViola Bordon is a Philadelphia-based sculptor and fiber artist whose work explores themes of power\, boundary\, control\, the body\, labor\, faith\, religion\, and isolation. She holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Fitzgerald. During the event\, Fitzgerald will present his experience with artist Tommy Simpson while preparing the publication. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at the event\, along with plenty of opportunities for conversation. \nAbout Oscar P. Fitzgerald \n Dr. Fitgerald has lectured worldwide including presentations to appraisers\, collectors\, museums\, and even several Atlantic Ocean crossings on Queen Elizabeth II. His books include American Furniture: 1650 to the Present (600 pages\, 800 illustrations)\, the standard text book in the field; the catalogue of studio furniture in the Smithsonian’s Renwick collection; and American Furniture Designers: 1900-2020\, published by Rowman Littlefield in 2022. His latest book\, The Art and Furniture of Tommy Simpson was published by Bloomsbury in January. American\nWalk-ups Welcome \nLin Elkins as the Fellow for their sixth annual Winter Residency Program. Launched in 2021\, the program is designed for artists based in the Greater Philadelphia region who work in the medium of wood and are pursuing research-based inquiries into sustainable creative practice. The two-month Residency culminates in an exhibition that is currently on view at NextFab. Going Up by Lin Elkins explores the various ways humans try to make sense of an unpredictable world. Games\, simple machines\, and small acts of participation become tools for thinking about fate\, progress\, and the desire to control what surrounds us. \nGoing Up is on view now through May 21\, 2026
